2 Men Died While Assisting Passenger Following a Sideswipe Collision
According to ABC7 Eyewitness News, a sideswipe crash that flipped an SUV ultimately resulted in two fatalities after subsequent collisions occurred at the scene. The wrecks happened on Interstate 80/94 in Gary shortly after 4 a.m. on a Saturday in February.
Indiana State Police determined that a Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound near the Grant Street exit when it sideswiped a tractor-trailer. The driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip over.
The motorist and front passenger climbed out of the vehicle to assist the 29-year-old man who had been riding in the back seat. The driver of a Honda Pilot also pulled over to assist them.
While they were helping the backseat passenger, a Volkswagen struck the Honda and then the Ford. State police claim the driver of the Volkswagen stopped and got out of the vehicle briefly before fleeing.
Moments later, a Hyundai Santa Fe struck one of the men who had been riding in the Ford. The motorist claims he had to swerve when the vehicle in front of him braked hard while passing the scene.
Investigators are unsure which vehicle struck the second victim, but responders pronounced both the driver and front passenger of the Ford dead at the scene. The back passenger of the Ford and the driver of the Hyundai sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were brought to North Lake Methodist for treatment.
Police diverted traffic onto Grant Street for approximately five hours to investigate the crash and clean up the wreckage. Authorities believe the Volkswagen was a black, four-door sedan and may have been a Passat. They urge anyone who has information about the hit-and-run motorist to contact them.
